Five tips to overcome your challenges in scaling 📈
CTO Advice Of The Month
Scaling is hard, whether you are trying to scale your business, an individual team or even an idea or initiative that has worked for one area of your company which you want to roll out to others.
As tech partners, we work with companies over the long term and as we have watched them grow, we have seen the challenges they have faced and this week I'd like to make a few observations that might help you when you think about growing your business:
Don't expect the culture to be the same: when you're a team of 2 or 5 its easy to define and maintain your company culture, as you grow to 10, 15, 20+ personnel, this becomes harder. Adapt your culture as you move along as you will be bringing in a diverse set of people with new ideas and different perspectives. You don't have to lose your core values but don't be afraid to tweak and change aspects of your culture as you grow
Review your processes: as you scale you may find that some of the processes you had in place don't scale, maybe you need to automate or maybe the process itself needs reworking. Don't assume that the process that works for 100 customers will work for 500
Implement good governance: if you don't have a governance framework in place, build one and the sooner the better. If you have control over your numbers, your KPIs etc then you can quickly see where growth / scaling impacts your business
Review your security measures: unfortunately we live in a world where cyber attacks are on the rise and the more employees you have the bigger the footprint for attack and as you get more customers, you have more to lose
Don't go it alone: seek advice, find others that have been through something similar and ask them for counsel as typically the problems you will face, will already have been solved by others
These are just some high level observations and if you want to talk through your scaling challenges then feel free to contact us to see how we can help. I'll leave you with a thought provoking podcast I recently listened to from Freakonomics Radio entitle "Why Do Most Ideas Fail to Scale?" "Why Do Most Ideas Fail to Scale?"
