Editor’s Note
We’re in the rundown to the UK elections, the French elections will be underway soon and we’ve just had the first Presidential debate in the US. We are awash with politics at the moment.
Last week, I was asked by my podcast co-host Alan Clarke about what I thought that we could learn about business from politicians and I have to be honest, I thought he was bonkers.
However as you look at what is going on right now in the world of politics and you take a little time to sit back and have a think, you’ll see that there are a lot of parallels between business and politics and from the shenanigans that is going on right now, you can easily what you shouldn’t be doing when running a business.
Political parties need money (investment), they need followers and evangelists (community) and at the very least they need to be able to communicate a clear vision of how they’ll govern the country and what they’ll do (strategy + execution plan).
I’m not saying we’re getting any of that from the current lot but just from that you’ll see the parallels but what is more interesting to me at this moment in time is that if you’re a business owner, you can see exactly how parties are failing.
You can see the hubris in certain politicians, you can see people just faking it, you see the egos, you see the lack of vision, direction, clarity and most of all you see the inability of leaders to actually put across their proposition in a manner that convinces us that they know what they are doing. They are not inspiring us to follow them.
All of the parties and personnel that are failing now are making mistakes that business owners make all of the time and you just have to look in front of you now to take in a great lesson for how not to run a business.
Who knew that politicians could actually teach you a thing or two about business?
