Welcome to the latest Atom CTO newsletter where we share tech news and stories for founders and entrepreneurs who are starting and scaling businesses.
Editor’s Note
I don’t think I’ve had a conversation this year that hasn’t involved AI, well, I exaggerate, I haven’t had many client conversations where AI hasn’t popped up on the agenda.
Is it going to transform businesses? Yes.
Are people going to lose their jobs? Yes.
Will your life be ruled by robots? Only if you let it.
AI tools are becoming more and more accessible each day and with the advent of agentic AI you can now have AI perform tasks on your behalf much more easily.
So what does all this mean for you dear reader? Well it means that you can no longer sit on the fence, you’re going to have to get involved (and at the bottom of this newsletter you have some links to handy tools you can play around with).
Having said this, we aren’t quite there yet.
Yes, there are a lot of great tools coming onto the market but many of them work around the edges of your business and what your teams do on a day to day basis. They are aides and not replacements for teams.
Sure, if you have the money that Klarna has, you can replace a fair amount of headcount but most companies don’t and so what you need is to make your teams more productive and doing more high value work rather than replacing them and this is the key to successfully implementing AI.
We talk to businesses every week that think that AI is a silver bullet that will solve many problems but it won’t, not yet. If you are thinking of deploying your own models then unless you have a spare million in the bank, you should think twice because AI is not a one and done.
What we find that people overlook is that models need constant training, just like humans they need to constantly learn in order to stay relevant which means that you are going to need to have experts in your business for the long term.
The other thing I feel people overlook is the human factor - there are some tasks that people do that make them happy as they are part of their jobs. The race to automation may take away some of the things that make people love their jobs, some tasks might be mundane but they can also be very satisfying.
Over the coming weeks we will be releasing a series of podcasts dedicated to AI, we’ll be explaining AI in the clearest language possible as well as giving you an understanding of what it takes to implement AI, machine learning, computer vision in the real world.
It is getting easier and quicker but not necessarily cheaper…
